HIGH-PERFORMING SCHOOL SYSTEMS™
THE WHEEL OF PERFORMANCE™
Quality of Student Work through a Data-Driven Culture
How do we know our strategies are working?
This indicator looks at how effectively your school uses evidence, student work, assessments, and results to make decisions and improve learning.
Does Any of This Sound Familiar?
School leaders who score lower on this indicator often tell us they’re experiencing some of the following:
If several of those sound familiar, the problem may be bigger than the issue you're currently trying to solve.
You may have a systems gap.
A NOTE FROM TOM
I've Been in Your Shoes.
I know what it's like to lead a school while trying to solve problems that seem to keep coming back.

Try This With Your Leadership Team This Week
Schools do not improve because they collect data. They improve because they act on the few metrics that matter, quickly.
The Metrics That Matter Huddle
Use this to turn your next data conversation into a decision.
Name Your Top Three
Ask the team to agree on the three metrics that best reflect student success right now. Everything else is secondary for this conversation.
Look for the Clue
Pull the latest results for those three metrics and ask: what is this telling us, and what is the most likely root cause?
Leave With an Action
Agree on one specific change, who owns it, and the date you will look at the evidence again.
But clarity alone doesn't fix the underlying system.
Don't Treat the Symptom and Miss the System.
One meeting may help.
One new template may help.
One difficult conversation may help.
One new program may help.
But if the underlying system remains weak, the problem eventually returns.
Problems Progress When Systems Don't.
A Common issue left unresolved can become Crucial.
A Crucial issue left unresolved can eventually become Critical.
When data is used to explain results rather than improve them, interventions stop being adjusted. Over time, resources go into strategies with no evidence of impact, achievement stalls, and staff become defensive about performance.
The goal isn't to panic about your score. It's to act while you still have the opportunity to strengthen the system.
So, What Do You Do Next?
Don't guess.
Follow a process.

Knowing the Gap Isn't Enough. You Need a Method for Closing It.
Your team can use the Library to:
Learn
Learn what high-performing practice looks like.
Assess
Assess where you are today.
Prioritize
Prioritize what matters most.
Design
Design a stronger system.
Act

Reflect
Reflect on the results.
That's how improvement becomes systematic instead of reactive.
WHAT CHANGES WHEN THE SYSTEM GETS STRONGER?
Â
Fewer problems keep coming back.
Your team knows what to do.
Ownership becomes clearer.
Decisions don't all have to come back to you.
And your school becomes less dependent on heroic effort to perform.
Â
Your school shouldn't become weaker when you step away.
Don't Stop at the Score.
You took the Wheel of Performance™ for a reason.
And now you have something many leadership teams never stop long enough to get:
You don't have to figure out what to do next by yourself. I'll help you get started.
