Most serious organizational problems don't suddenly appear.
They send signals first.
A great employee becomes disengaged.
Parent concerns increase.
Board meetings become less productive.
Enrollment begins to soften.
Accountability becomes inconsistent.
Communication starts breaking down.
At first, these issues can seem relatively small.
That's why throughout our High-Performing School Systems work, I encourage leaders to think about problems through three stages:
COMMON → CRUCIAL → CRITICAL
The best time to address a problem is while it's still common.
But there's a danger.
When we've lived with something long enough, we can begin treating it as normal.
"That's just how our board operates."
"That employee has always been that way."
"We've always struggled with communication."
Be careful.
Today's Leadership Question:
What warning sign has your organization started treating as normal?
If you're not sure, the Ten Indicators Assessment is a good place to start looking.
To your continued leadership and success.
P.S. If you already took the assessment, where were your strategic gaps? Not sure, reply to this email and I’ll help you identify the biggest opportunities you have to WIN this year!
