“I thought everyone knew.”
I’ve heard those words after more leadership problems than I can count.
I thought they knew the deadline.
I thought they understood the expectation.
I thought someone contacted the parents.
I thought someone else owned it.
Here’s the problem:
Assumptions create gaps. And gaps create confusion.
I’ve learned something about confused people:
Confused people DO NOTHING!
So assume nothing.
Repeat important information.
Clarify expectations.
Confirm understanding.
Identify ownership.
Before an important conversation ends, make sure people know:
What needs to happen. Why it matters. When it’s due. Who owns it.
Don’t confuse repetition with poor communication.
Sometimes people need to hear something several times before it becomes clear.
Clarity isn’t redundancy. Clarity is leadership.
