What Leaders Tolerate Becomes the Standard

Uncategorized Sep 01, 2026

Here's a leadership truth that can be uncomfortable:

Your organization's real standard isn't necessarily what you SAY you expect.

It's what you consistently accept.

You can say meetings begin at 8:00.

But if everyone routinely walks in at 8:10 and nothing changes...

8:10 is the standard.

You can say deadlines matter.

But if deadlines continually pass without accountability...

that's the real standard.

The same is true for communication, instruction, professionalism, culture, governance, and performance.

And this is where leadership and systems intersect.

Leaders establish the standard.

Systems help make the standard repeatable.

Today's Leadership Question:

Where is there a gap between the standard you've communicated and the standard you're actually accepting?

Don't immediately blame the person.

Ask whether the expectation is clear, whether accountability exists, and whether you've built a system capable of reinforcing the standard.

Sometimes the problem isn't the standard.

It's the system underneath it.
